LED Video Wall FAQ

LED Video Walls are metal tile frames that hold modules made up of Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) which produce light, which is fed from a video processor that converts your video signal to light. When enough LEDs are close enough to each other, and are processed well, the end result is bright, high contrast, stunning video.

LED Video Walls have 4 key advantages over projection:

1. Brightness and contrast – LED video walls are unarguably brighter than projection, and because the screen is black instead of white, the contrast is significantly higher.
2. Room Aesthetics – LED video walls require no projectors hanging in the room, which looks better and produces less room noise.
3. Long Term Maintenance – LED video walls last 12-15 years versus 5-7 for projection, and require no lamp changes and minimal maintenance.
4. More Flexible – LED video walls can fit any aspect ratio, not just 16:9, 16:10, or 4:3.

The LED diodes on LED video walls sold by CCI Solutions are rated for an 100,000 hours life span of 24/7 use at full power. Factoring in normal usage, plus the life span of the power supplies and receiving cards on the tiles, the industry says the expected life span of an LED video wall should be 12-15 years.

It is recommended that your viewing audience is no closer than 1 Meter for every 1 mm of pixel pitch, so that people see video and not the individual pixels. For example, with a 3.8 mm pixel pitch wall, the minimum recommended viewing distance is 12.6' (3.8 meters). The exception to this is when you simply prefer a higher resolution than what the minimum recommended viewing pixel pitch provides, at which point you can either but a larger wall (for more pixels) or a tighter pixel pitch. For example, the actual resolution of a 3.8 mm pixel pitch wall at a size of 16' by 9' is 1280x720. To get 1920x1080 video resolution with your LED video wall, you would need to increase your 3.8mm pixel pitch wall to 24' by 13.5' in size, or go to a 2.5 mm pixel pitch for the same 16'x9' LED video wall.

The electronics and wiring aspects of LED video walls are the easier part of installing a wall. The complexity comes in hanging or wall mounting the tiles. It's critical to ensure tiles are hung/mounted level, with equal weight distribution, or else you will see some slight bowing or gapping in the tiles, which will lead to a poor viewing experience. But most importantly, these weigh a significant amount and must be installed securely for the safety of those on stage and potentially those in the audience. Each tile weighs a little under 18 lbs. One you add up all of the tiles, cable, and rigging bars, it can equal up to 25 lbs per tile. With any LED video wall you order from CCI Solutions, we'll include a drawing set that specifies the complete weight of your LED video wall for discussion with your Structural Engineer.

For the Acclaim 3.8 LED video wall tiles, which are our most common tile sold, Absen recommends no more than 20 tiles per 20-amp circuit of power, with no more than 10 tiles paralleled on one outlet. Tiles from different manufacturers, series, or a different pixel pitch will have different power requirements. With any LED video wall you order from CCI Solutions, we'll include a drawing set that specifies the complete power needs of your LED video wall for discussion with your electrician and/or Electrical Engineer.

If you see gaps or seeams between your LED video wall tiles, it's likely because they aren't hung or mounted quite right. For flown LED video walls, weight from the header bar must be evenly distributed to structure of some sort or you will get a minimal amount of sag at the point that has less weight, which will result in small gaps between tiles. For wall mounted LED video walls, gaps or seeams most often occur when your wall isn't flat or the mounts aren't level.

LED video walls purchased from CCI Solutions come with drawings that specify how to wire the data ports of your LED video wall, and your Novastar VX4s processor comes preconfigured to that wiring scheme. If your Novastar processor has lost its settings, we've included a USB thumb drive with a backup of that file on it which can be used to restore your configuration. One of the key advantages to LED video walls is their brightness, ensuring they can be clearly seen in any light situation. Another key advantage is their ultra-wide viewing angles. LED video walls sold by CCI Solutions have a viewing angle of 140-160 degrees, meaning you can still read text even if you're at a significant side-angle. Many churches we work with have moved to a single center screen as it sufficiently supports even a wide room.

If you have a single or multiple LED diodes out on a module, replace your module with one of your spare modules (watch this video for instructions). If your LED video wall is still under warranty, send the module to Absen for warranty repair. If your LED video wall is no longer under warranty, you can choose to have the module fixed or not, at your expense.

If your tile won't turn on, verify whether or not the power indicator lights are lit on the back of the tile. If not, it's likely that your power supply has gone out. Replace your power supply with one of your spare power supplies (watch this video for instructions). If your LED video wall is still under warranty, send the power supply to Absen for warranty repair. If your LED video wall is no longer under warranty, you can choose to have the power supply fixed or not at your expense.

If your tile won't show video, verify whether or not the power indicator lights are lit on the back of the tile. If the lights are on but video is not showing on a single tile, it's likely that your receiving card has gone out. Replace your receiving card with one of your spare receiving cards (watch this video for instructions). If your LED video wall is still under warranty, send the receiving card to Absen for warranty repair. If your LED video wall is no longer under warranty, you can choose to have the receiving card fixed or not at your expense.
